Scope of Practice

Acupuncture is provided by state licensed Acupuncturists (L.Ac.), who are required to hold a Master’s degree as an entry-level standard, for professional practice in the U.S. prior to examination and licensure.

In the state of California, an licensed acupuncturist is considered a primary health care professional who has the ability to diagnose, prescribe and administer treatments. Place orders for laboratory testing and imaging testing (MRIs and such if medically necessary).

The scope of an acupuncturist’s license authorizes the holder thereof to engage in the practice of acupuncture, to perform or prescribe the use of acupressure, breathing techniques, exercise, heat, cold, magnets, nutrition, diet, herbs, plant, animal and mineral products, and dietary supplements to promote, maintain and restore health.

California is the only state that has its’ own licensing board and exam, all other states where acupuncture is regulated issue licenses based on passing the national exam from the NCCAOM (acupuncturists are tested on biomedicine, acupuncture, oriental theory and herbal medicine prior to receiving their state license).

For safety and to ensure proper referral of patients to other medical providers, acupuncturists must study at least 86 units in Biomedicine: Medical terminology, biology, chemistry, psychology, physics, anatomy, physiology, bio-chemistry, research methodology, nutrition, general pathology, systemic pathology, endocrinology, neuroscience, physical diagnosis, pharmacology, clinical medicine, differential diagnosis, case management, public health, ethics, and practice management.  Plus an additional 126 units of; acupuncture theory, therapy, techniques, acupressure, Chinese herbal medicine theory, single herbs, herbal formulas, Oriental Medicine theory, diagnosis, and internal medicine along with close to one thousand hours (960 hour) of clinical training.

The scope of practice of acupuncturists are different in each state.  Please check with your regulating state board.  All acupuncture information on this website pertains to California state regulations and may be specific to my areas of specialty, interest and expertise.
